Imagination

A phrase recently caught my eye in “The Holy in the Night” by Shannon Dycus. Speaking of Mary, the mother of Jesus, “she is expectant with a faithfulness that imagines the world differently”.

May there be peace on earth in the coming year!

In what ways are you faithfully expectant?

Advent

“They seemed to be staring at the dark, but their eyes were watching God.”, author Zora Neale Hurston wrote. In this season of long nights, in the dark spaces of our times, in this season of Advent for Christians, we wait, we watch, we look, we long for God’s coming.

How do our eyes watch for God?

Bee balm

“He was hovering above some blackberry sprays just touching flowers here and there, yet all unconsciously life, life, life was left behind at every touch.” ~ Lillias Trotter

Are you aware how your lightest touches leave life behind?

Practicing

“Try to put well into practice what you already know; and in so doing, you will, in good time, discover the hidden things which you now inquire about. Practice what you know, and it will help to make clear what now you do not know.” ~ Rembrandt Van Rijn

What are you practicing to discover what you don’t know?

Observation

It takes practices to notice the strength of light and shadow that gives things their form and shape, to pay attention so you can touch the mystery that is being revealed in everyday life.

How do you pay attention to the quality of light and shadow?

Piecing together

Some days it seems important to simply gather the pieces that have been cut and broken and put them together in new ways to find beauty.

What pieces are you laying out in new patterns to find beauty in the brokenness of these days?
