Sacred songs

“And so by fateful chance the Negro folk-song — rhythmic cry of the slave — stands today not simply as the sole American music, but as the most beautiful expression of human experience born this side the seas.” W.E.B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk

Encounters

“Our encounters with strangers—the unknown, the unexpected, foreign elements that spark our fear—are precisely the places where we are most likely to encounter God.” ~ Christine Valters Paintner

What sparks your fear?

Awakening

I have discovered that something is awakened through failure, tragedy, and disappointment. It is a place of learning and potential creativity. In such moments you can get lost in despair or denial, or you can recognize the failure and run toward the hope of something new.

How do you run towards hope?

Aligning

Poetry, the most ancient form of prayer, is a necessary medicine for our times: a companion through difficulty; a guide when we are lost; a salve when we are wounded; and a conduit to an inner source of joy, freedom and insight. ~ Kim Rosen

What is poetry to you?

A song rises

Out of the heart

The song rises,

The mind searching

For notes

To capture

its flight. ~ Murray Bodo O.F.M.
